This book is very, very basic. It's more of an extended manual then a getting started guide. I had hoped for something that would focus on the unique attributes of the Galileo over arduono & other boards. But instead it covers even less then the arduono books it references.The book spends far too much time on basic set up & installation as well as a lot of time talking about the maker movement & why boards like this are cool. It then spends a lot of time on basic C & Python coding tutorials. It really only covers one unique Galileo feature: the system() function. And the few code examples it has, are barely explained.Save your time & money, read "Getting Started with Arduino" & " Going Further with Arduino" these have a much greater breadth & depth of information.

This was a good fast read and walks you through several easy sketches and circuit builds. The problem is it leaves you wanting more and the book does not go past an introduction to Galileo. Also some good reference pages but it would have been 5 stars if this would have went a little further. All of this info is available on the internet with a 5second search.I know the title contains "Getting Started" but that is literally all it does. If you are already pretty familiar with Arduino this book will do nothing for you.

Sometimes you just want to know where to start. It is like knowing the forest from the trees. This book did just that to me. I'm a computer professional but I am new to Intel's board which meant that I meed to actually understand what the board was basically capable of and what are the APIs and where the things I can generally do. In about two hours, I am up to speed, at least as a starter and that's not bad at all. I know that much from experience.I recommend you get it if you are new to the intel platform.

This isn't a book about the Intel Galileo, it's a book about how to do Arduino programming for the Intel Galileo. I already know how to code the Arduino, what I was looking for was details about what makes the Galileo unique and some examples that leverage Galileo-specific features and capabilities. Instead it's mostly Arduino stuff.

This book should be called "Using the Intel Galileo as a $70 Arduino Uno". It spends 90% of the book on Arduino sketches. Which while interesting is not the reason why you get a galileo. Very little information on interfacing linux side with the inputs.

I wanted very much to like this book, but I just can't... When an author takes on the endevour of teaching the reader about something, they take on the responsibility to do so accurately. This is especially true on technical subject. Unfortunately, this book falls way short.At first I thought the author just wasn't a hardware guy. I've run into this in the past. My freshman year, I had a EE-Digital Design professor that didn't truly understand the analog the digital world is built on. He could quote the "rules" of EE-DD off the top of his head, but didn't know why they existed or how to tweak them to his use. I thought this after reading things like saying that there's the hall effect sensor is "nothing more than a simple switch". Yes, you can purchase a Hall Effect SWITCH, but the author shows a phidgets 1108 Hall Effect SENSOR - an analog device. Even a simple look at the phidgets page for the part shows it is "provides a voltage output that is proportional to the applied magnetic field." So no, it is NOT "nothing more than a simple switch". He also writes that he sees little use for such a device on a rover "outside a certain small niche of applications". The most common use for the device is rotational speed encoding... like used when trying to keep 2 motors running at the same speed to make a rover go in a straight line. Maybe the author should have look at Make:Sensors on the subject which even mentions speed encoding and talks about how to read it as an analog device.Then a page later or so, he tells about pull up/down resistors. He fairly accurately describes their use and floating inputs, but then writes that we can "do the same in code". The code simply enables the hardware pull up/down resistors that's built into the RPi. There's no software that can fix a floating input.The next page we hit the use of a "reed switch" where how shows a micro-switch. A reed switch is a magnetic switch like those used in burgular alarm systems. Two or three reeds are in a glass capsule with inert gas that switches when in proximity to a magnet. Just in case I was just used to common terms, I searched and could find no reference to a microswitch being called a reed switch.Then I started looking at the code snippets included in the book. Basic generally accepted software constructs like using a constant for pin assignment aren't there. So if we want to change a GPIO pin, we'd need to change it in every line of code that uses it. And if you mix multiple segments, suppose that the same pin for different sensors, we need to fix this BEFORE trying to incorporate it. This severely limits the reusability of the code.So while I wanted to like this book, I just couldn't. I couldn't even finish it. I'm actually a bit sorry I bought it. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but if you're teaching a technical subject, please research - at least the simple things, which this book doesn't.

Not very useful, the book is a general intro and would require a considerable amount of shop tools and skill to actually build the device he describes. The code examples are printed in the book and there does not seem to be any way to download the code for the examples( I checked the book website, there are no links to any example code). I found Dr Simon Monks' book on programming the Raspberry Pi to be more useful, I actually built the little robot he describes and learned some Python along the way.Rob

The book doesn't tell you how to control the GPIO pins in the Python shell. Or in the Graphical User Interface (GUI).It's a great book, but he even says that he'll leave the software for his readers to figure out,

This is a good book in many ways. The most important thing I got out of this book is the idea that building a decent sized autonomous robot is not a forbidding task. And, indeed, I've started converting an old pedal car into an autonomous vehicle using many of the ideas from this book. Kudos to the author for that kick in the pants!However, this book does not present a cut-and-dried set of instructions. You must be ready to read between the lines in order to get the most out of it. Not necessarily a bad thing but it's when I started doing it myself that I noticed the little things left unexplained. Given that I think anyone high school age and over should be able to do this on their own and what a marvelous project for a younger child and adult to share!And, as a professional and hobby software developer of long repute, I feel I must point out that the code examples are of fairly poor quality. They get the job done but certainly are not the best examples of how to do so! Take it as a challenge to refactor the code to be more efficient and you will be rewarded with developing good coding skills!In summation, if you have any interest in graduating up from tiny toy robots to something substantial than ignore any negative reviews and use this book as one of your guides. A lot of good ideas in here and they should not be ignored because of a few flaws.

the idea is great. but i think for beginner, the quickiest way to get the hardware is to buy them. i bought makeblock for this purpose.

(Genetic Programming and Evolvable Machines)The contributions are interdisciplinary, containing discussions relating to, among other topics, history, biology, the arts, politics, computing and philosophy. It readily becomes apparent that opinions in some areas are very much divided. Progress in AI has certainly not been made at the rates predicted by Minsky. Indeed, it is suggested that perhaps no progress has been made at all, save in the wrong direction. Further, many of the questions that were posed 60 years ago are still pertinent and unanswered today. The fourteen articles are supplemented with transcripts of interviews with five highly influential figures in fields related to machine intelligence. Together these contributions paint a vivid picture not only of cybernetic and AI research in particular, but more generally, of researchers and research communities at work. This book covers using the Raspberry Pi as the coordinator and/or data aggregation node in a sensor network, something that the excellent "Building Wireless Sensor Networks" by Faludi doesn't go into. It has many interesting projects and examples, and gives you the basics you need to build progressively more complex sensor networks. As others have noted, the scope of the book is limited, but this isn't surprising as to cover the broad area of wireless sensor network applications in general would be a difficult prospect for any single book. My issue with this book is the fairly large number of errata and the lack of an active discussion area on the book at the Apress web site. As of today (11/17/2015), Apress says that no errata for the book have been submitted. I find this very hard to believe, as this is a popular text and anyone who actually does the example projects would find the same issues I did. Example: on p. 178, in the Arduino sketch, the formula for the code line for calculating the temperature in Celsius is copied from the XBee example on p. 93. However, because the XBee can only read voltages to 1200 mV on its analog input pin, and the Arduino reads 5000 mV on its analog input pin, the scaling factor is wrong and you get the wrong temperature readings. There are many errors like this in the book. Additionally, because (unlike the Faludi book) there is no discussion area, as things change with the Raspi firmware and Raspian distribution (e.g. recent firmware change causes problems with I2C configuration that result in the book examples not working), there is no place for users to go to get help. My suggestion is to get both this book and the better-supported Faludi book, and work carefully through the examples. I'm going to submit the errata I've found to Apress, but cannot guarantee they will be published on the book's web page. Good luck with your sensor networks!

An excellent book that builds on others basic howtos to make distributed systems of use. If you will this is the next step after you have learned from some of the good basic books how to make the arduino and local sensors work into making it really useful across a bigger area as a network. Out of maybe 10~15 arduino books I have looked at this is one of the four I have kept as well worth it in fact its the best. IMHO most books on arduinos out there are I think rubbish so choose carefully. NB the other three I found very good were all basic howtos and one of them alone would have been enough plus this one and in fact their info can all be got on line easily as tutorials, but not this book's contents. The only downside is it seems to be aging a little as newer micro communications that are a lot cheaper than X-bees come out but its the backend that matters and it is still 100% sound. The only other book needed for a beginner to go with this would be one of the following, Exploring Arduino - Jeremy Blum, Arduino for Dummies, Arduino programming in 24hours.

The book begins with the usual, "Getting Started" topics including background info and detailed examples. This is all pretty straightforward and about what you'd find in many other microcontroller/sensor tutorials.The big surprise was the second half of the book which introduces the mySQL database server and the different ways a sensor network can be configured with mySQL as the data repository. One such configuration is a bunch of sensors connected to Arduino's, which are, in turn, connected to mySQL running on a Raspberry Pi.This is way cooler than writing text records to an SD card. I've got enough new project ideas to keep me busy for years!

Very informative and full of valuable information, especially for guys like me. I'm new-ish to building with micro-controllers and micro-computers.

This book was a great help to me, and now to the other folks I have recommended it to as well.

The title turns out to be sheer hyperbole. Not at all useful to experts, not at all advanced, not comprehensive, and difficult to understand due to misuse of terminology. At the beginning there is a lot of redundant filler as each of several motor drivers is superficially covered, and there is a plague of grammar/syntax errors throughout. Obviously this book was not proof read or edited by someone skilled in English writing.Instead of schematic diagrams for wiring schemes, we are treated to drawings of solderless breadboards with the jumper wiring installed. I suppose if you are the type that wants to follow a rote set of instructions without really understanding what you are doing, then this is a good book for you, hence 2 stars instead of one.The price of this book is fair for a good technical reference of less than 200 pages, but a proper editing of this work would result in at best 100 pages, and it would still be rather superficial compared to the lofty title. I was hoping to find some information about how the step count can be much higher than the number of poles, but was left with only "the rotor and stator have teeth". I was also hoping to gain a better understanding of micro-stepping, but was again disappointed.There are several significant or silly errors. The confusion between current and Amps is tolerable, but when volts are flowing around the motor, that is just silly. There is a misguided effort to classify processors into microcontrollers and microcomputers. The criterion chosen is whether the processor can do analog signals or not. Really? And then there is the claim that PWM signals are analog signals and that the Raspberry-Pi can therefore not do PWM, since it's a microcomputer. To be clear, a PWM signal is digital, with the high state and low state times being modulated. It can be integrated to give an analog voltage, but the actual signal is digital. This could lead to problems when using PWM for "voltage" control, since there are also frequency and impedance dependencies when doing PWM power control.Totally missing are any sort of dynamic system considerations such a ramping up speed and ramping it down, and the attendant control system properties required to actually make a system work well. There is no quantitative treatment of voltage/current/torque characteristics, and very little guidance for motor selection for applications.If you have a box of parts with a stepper motor and you want to control it with an Arduino, then this book has some useful step-by-step instructions. However, the information contained in this book is easily found for free on the Internet by searching various CNC, 3D printing, and robotics sites.

I am sure it is hard to hit the "sweet spot" when evaluating your readership. Most articles on the internet require wading through a lot of mathematics or focus on how to strip a wire. I think you have written a valuable book that provides easily found material for reference. I am sure that I will find much use for this book. Sometimes simply opening a page to see the wiring diagram is valuable when you simply want a workable solution. That is not to say that the book does not go into enough detail to understand how the motor functions.

This is an awesome book! This is just what I was looking for. I had some stepper motors that I saved from some old printers hoping to figure out how to get them to work. There's a lot of stuff on the the internet but the info I found was either not complete, not helpful or just went so far over my head that my head spun. This book made it super easy to understand everything about stepper motors. The author explains everything in plain English so that I could understand it. I really like that the book showed me how to figure out what kind of motors I had based upon the number of wires and how to wire them and get them working. I never used an Arduino before but this book showed me how to use that also. I was so happy with myself that I got my motors to work so quickly. I'm also a frugal guy and I really like that the author showed me how to save money. I even learned about microstepping, a very advanced topic. No where..I mean NO WHERE online could I find an easy explanation of microstepping but Wright explained it in a way I could easily understand. He also lists the programs on the website so I could just copy and paste them. I highly recommend that anyone buy this book!

This book is poorly written. I own a huge library of electronics books and this book is my least favorite. EMF is known as 'electromotive force' but in this book EMF is 'electromagnetic feedback', after reading that I am very sceptical of everything else the author writes. The more I read, the more I dislike this book, many mistakes and full of filler, I assume to make the book appear as though it is packed with more info than is really there. The author likes the phrase " I'll show you how " or " don't worry, I'll show you how " or " later on, I'll show you how ", I guess he's gonna show me how but home many chapters must I read until he " shows me how " ? There is information within this book but after you strip away all the crap that comes with it, the book is nowhere close to being worth the price. I would not recommend this book, it is very amateurish and nonprofessional.

Great book. Written very well and extremely informative. It was just what I was looking for.
